My African Masks are all new industrial scrap steel from factories currently in operation. The faces are industrial stampings I've reworked, and the jagged necks are gear-cutting machine tools called hobs. I found these pieces before I had a concept. To me they were African in that the faces were direct, very expressive with minimal features, no eyelids, no eyelashes, no cheeks. The hobs are sharp-edged and decorative, suggesting dance and costume.
