This commission's theme is the celebration of life. I chose a very contemporary material, stainless steel, but applied ancient blacksmithing methods of heat, hammers, and tongs to bend the metal into the DNA helix, which underlies all life. A special patina was applied in purples, golds and reds using only hot gases. This 15-foot helix, weighing only 500-pounds, trembles in the high winds off Lake Michigan but will never break.
